Trailer Appeal - 2/5
Udta Punjab is based on the theme of drugs in Punjab, where a large proportion of youth is drug addict. Again a fantastic theme, which hasn't been explored. But trailer doesn't give a feel for the film. I just hope they don't trivialize the issue and just focus on action masala sequences. It would be a disgrace such grave subject.
Shahid Kapoor as druggie rockstar Tommy Singh is very impressive. Alia Bhatt in a non glamorous avatar as a laborer from Bihar looks very different but not believable. It is good that she is trying different roles but definitely needs to put in more effort. Diljit Dosanjh was also largely unimpressive. He is a well known name in Punjabi films. Time will tell if that translates to fan following in Bollywood as well. Kareena Kapoor brings in some energy in trailer that could be one of the saving grace for the film.
Director Abhishek Chaubey is no newcomer to Bollywood and has been associated with many critically acclaimed films namely Ishqiya, Kaminey, Omkara, Maqbool. Film is slated to be released on 17th June 2016.
Lets wait and watch but for the time being, I am giving it a thumbs down.
